Premier torrenting client BitTorrent helped bridge the gap between the torrent and music industry this year, releasing high-profile albums, discographies, and music packages for a plethora of today's biggest artists. BitTorrent has now released their annual BitTorrent Report, a study on their most downloaded items of the year. The report found that Diplo ranked as the 2nd most downloaded artist of the year, largely due to the F10rida bundle that the client hosted. EDM artists following Diplo included Gramatik at number three, Zeds Dead at number five, and the Mad Decent package at number 10.
BitTorrent also found that its users were 170 percent more likely to purchase their music than average Internet users, challenging many opposing beliefs on the success of torrents. Thanks to BitTorrents "paygate" downloads, enabling users to download torrent bundles for a price, 6.5 million users purchased paygate bundles, with 90 percent of the money going back to the original artists. These statistics from this report signify a growing trend in the music industry, one that could attract more musicians as time progresses.
