After Apple Music recruited award-winning radio DJ Zane Lowe as director of Beats 1 back in March, dance music DJ Annie Mac replaced him as host of the 7pm specialist show on BBC Radio 1. It could have been considered a loss for BBC Radio 1, but since Mac has taken over, listening stats have rocketed.

Mac has built a reputation as a prominent tastemaker in the dance music industry through her club tours, compilation albums and her Friday night Radio 1 show.

According to reports, Mac brought with her 110,000 new listeners, boosting the audience to 1.74 million. While the 7pm specialist show has been known to break in indie acts like Arctic Monkeys, Mac is bringing new life to the program with artists like Danish singer and electronic producer Mura Masa.

In addition to Mac's new role, Radio 1 has seen success with the promotion of another rising female DJ, Clara Amfo, who added 300,000 to Fearne Cotton's morning show and Live Lounge.
