Essena O'Neill Takes Stance Against Vapidity Of Social Media Career [VIDEO]
Australian Social media starlet Essena O'Neill announced Monday that she was leaving behind her hundreds of thousands of followers on Youtube, Instagram, Tumblr and Snapchat, taking a stance against the vapidity of being an online model and renaming her Instagram account “Social Media Is Not Real Life.” The 18 year old socialite began deleting her Instagram photos, re-captioning the few that remained to reflect the reality of their subjects.
Realizing that everything she had strived to become over the last several years of her life had brought her no happiness, O'Neill is now using her platform to speak out against the fakeness of it all.
"Social media, especially how I used it, isn’t real. It’s contrived images and edited clips ranked against each other. It’s a system based on social approval, likes, validation in views, success in followers. It’s perfectly orchestrated self absorbed judgement. I was consumed by it."
In light of the announcement, O'Neill is launching her new website Let's Be Game Changers, to lead her crusade against the hollow world of likes and shares. Commenting on the role she hopes her new initiative will play, O'Neill said, "I know you didn’t come into this world just wanting to fit in and get by. You are reading this now because you are a game changer, you might not know your power yet, I am just finding mine, but man… when you do… far out you’ll go crazy."
