Dutch producer Fedde le Grand may not be at the top of your Soundcloud feed, but he’s breaking barriers in the most unexpected way. He is the producer behind the world’s first dance music ballet, presumably self-titled, GRAND. The performance debuted on February 6 & 7, 2015 at Amsterdam’s Royal Dutch Theater and inthemix was there to tell us what occurred.

Before the show even started, there was much to be said about the crowd and the atmosphere of the theater. Audience members hung out at the back of the bar, standing separated distinctly by their motivation to attend. On one hand, there were the “music people,” dressed in all black, and then there were the regular ballet goers, fashioned in gowns and tuxedos.

For this production, Fedde had many factors to consider than he normally does. Ballerinas, trapeze artists, and live singers are just a few of the types of artists that went into the production of GRAND. As for music, Fedde “lays down a groove of standard tech house… [with] some sampling of earlier 90’s tracks, all dropped subtly.”

While this whole idea seems crazy, it could be telling us which market dance music will penetrate next. As EDM fans get older, it may become just as normal to see a DJ in a theatre as it is at a festival.
