Artist Collects Sounds Lost In The MP3 Conversion Process
Music formats are a tricky thing: they allow us to hear music on the go, but the conversion processes take cut some of the sounds out of the original recordings. Ryan Maguire, a composer and sound artist, has made efforts to trace what he calls the "ghosts" of mp3 files to see what all is cut out when songs are converted to the digital format. The result is mindblowing. The isolated tracks collect haunting, almost beautiful songs that could very well stand on their own. These ghosts sound like tracks straight from an experimental producer and could foreshadow future innovations in music production.
