Staff Picks: 5 Favorite Songs Of The Week Vol. 19
Every week, a member of the EDM.com team collects a list of their favorite tracks from the last week. This week, Cody Smith highlights picks ranging from europhoric progressive house with deadmau5 to future bass insanity with Mr. Carmack.
Here are Cody's 5 favorite tracks of the week:
1. Mr. Carmack - "FF308"
Future house and trap purveyor Mr. Carmack has a knack for releasing older, unreleased songs every so often on his Soundcloud. Dubbed "Mr. Carmack's Secret Gems," this vault of the producers past tunes makes for some great looks into the early beginnings of this bubbling producer. This week's track, titled "FF308", takes some sonic cues from Nujabes with its soft piano keys. 808s pop up to transition the soft melody into a vocal-spliced laden beat. We're very glad Mr. Carmack decided to show off this track for the dedicated fans.
2. Vices & Jailo & BrassTracks & K.B. Starr - "We Bout It"
Artist collective Moving Castle houses a number of impressive producers, all of which are showcased on the latest compilation "Moving Castle Vol. 004." One particular track, a voint venture among producers Vices, Jailo and BrassTracks and rapper K.B. Starr, fuses jazzy instrumentals and a jersey club beat. These producers are quickly becoming some of the most forward-thinking musicians in the game, and "We Bout It" only marks the beginning for these innovators.
3. Troy Samuela & Monsoonsiren - "Fiend"
Speaking of artist collectives, ODESZA recently launched the Foreign Family Collective, a platform that the duo plan to utilize to showcase the best of their contemporaries' music. The first release comes in the form of the Troy Samuela and Monsoonsiren collaboration "Fiend." Troy Samuela gives the dream pop elements a darker twist, punctuated by Moonsoonsiren's chilling vocals. Monsoonsiren previously featured on ODESZA's single "Memories That You Call," and it's great to see the vocalist add to Samuela's talents.
4. Maribou State - "Rituals" (MS Rework)
Downtempo maestroes Maribou State decided to rework their single "Rituals," and this new interpretation takes the original track to new, exciting heights. Maribou State gives the listener room to breathe as they build up the reworked elements, hinting at the changes to come. The vocals hide behind a warm haze, cooled by a fuzzy synth and dancefloor-ready claps. This rework suits a club set very well, and reinforces this rising duo's exceptional talent.
5. Colleen D'Agostino feat. deadmau5 - "Stay" (Drop The Poptart Edit)
Last but certainly not least, deadmau5 finally releases the long-awaited collaboration with recent mau5trap signee Colleen D'Agostino. This "Drop The Poptart" edit of "Stay" draws comparisons to many of the classic deadmau5 tracks featured on his album Random Album Title. D'Agostino's airy vocals enhance the gradually-building melodies supplied by the mau5, easing the listener into the track's nine-minute runtime. While Colleen receives top billing, deadmau5's ear for uplifting progressive sounds defines this latest release.
