As much as EDM dominates modern culture, too few artists use the genre to convey thought-provoking themes and ideas. Enter Nicolas Jaar, a young producer who has altered the state of dance music in a variety of ways since his first release. From orchestrating electronic guitar band DARKSIDE to including commentary from a David Lynch TV series on the Essential Mix, Jaar has subverted dance music's tropes over his short career.
His newest contribution comes in the form of a score for a short documentary on police brutality. Titled "Eleven Times," Jaar collaborated with producer Brian Jackson to create a moody soundtrack to director Samantha Casolari's 5-minute doc on victims of corrupt police in New York City. The soundtrack reinterprets the Gil-Scott Heron song "Winter In America"; Jackson worked with Heron up to the soul singer's death in 2011.
