As much as the mainstream media may present the music festival experience as a quintessential rite of passage for modern youths, fitting it into your budget can pose undeniable challenges. LA Weekly just broke down the costs associated with attending Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, and when you do the math, it's a bit shocking.

While a three-day pass to the festival alone cost her $375, California resident and singer/songwriter Sierra Blackford estimated the total cost of the outing to be around $1,200. VIP amenities and other luxuries would multiply this modest figure three to fivefold.

Tickets to Woodstock, the festival that started it all, cost $18 in 1969 - the equivalent of $120 today when adjusted for inflation. Concert tickets as a whole have increased in value by 400% from 1981 to 2012.
