Woman Sues Steve Aoki For Stage Dive-Related Neck Injury
Cake-throwing, crowd-surfing Steve Aoki has found himself in hot water with his infamous stage antics. Concert-goer Brittany Hickman is suing the EDM megastar after she sustained a broken neck at a show three years ago when Aoki conducted one of his signature stage dives.
While his theatrical feats have become an integral part of the Aoki live show, his days of stage diving may be numbered.
The victim, Hickman attended one of Aoki's shows in 2012 at the Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego where Aoki went through his usual routine of jumping off of the stage onto a life raft.
While the victim claims she doesn't remember much as she was knocked unconscious, the surveillance footage shows the DJ climbing rigging to jump off an elevated stage into the life raft, which was held by concert-goers in the front rows.
“I was trapped underneath the pool raft because they threw it out right where I was standing. My friends told me he landed on top of the pool raft, hit me on top of the head and I got knocked over,” Hickman told ABC 10 News.
In the days following the incident, Hickman found out that the blow had actually broken her neck, with doctors reporting that it could have very easily lead to paraplegia. In addition to suing Aoki, Hickman is also suing the Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego where the concert took place.
ABC 10 reached out to Steve Aoki’s team for a response, and received the following reply:
“Thank you for your inquiry. As you know I am the attorney representing Mr. Aoki. This matter arises out of an incident which occurred at the Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego, three years ago. In addition to Mr. Aoki, Ms. Hickman is also suing Hard Rock. Trial in this matter is scheduled for August 28, 2015 before Judge Pressman of the San Diego Superior Court. Because of the ongoing litigation and the pending trial date it would not be appropriate for us to respond to your inquiry at this time or permit an interview.”
The case is now headed to trial.
