Dance music veteran Richie Hawtin has been awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Huddersfield, allowing him to teach at the university level in the degree's field.

The Canadian-Born DJ has been presented the award among eight others that are perceived to be “distinguished people from the media, science, enterprise, politics and the arts.”

Hawtin’s relationship with the university appears to stem from his connections to Dr. Nick Bougaieff, a member of the Popular Music Studies Research Group whose doctoral thesis focused on minimal techno, specifically the live performance methods from the 2010-11 Plastikman Live tour.

Hawtin has always applied an intellectual approach to his craft, and the techno-master could soon be teaching the next generation of production lords.

See the full photo lineup of the 2015 honorees on the university’s website, where Hawtin is very obviously, but awesomely the odd man out.
