Bassnectar Reveals Details Of Collab With Rage Against The Machine Guitarist Tom Morello
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Lorin Ashton, better known as Bassnectar, revealed some details about his upcoming collaboration with Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello. Considering both Tom Morello’s heavily processed signature guitar sound and Ashton’s background in Metal and Rock, the pairing of the two sounds is a match made in heaven. News of the collaboration was teased in March when photos of the two in the studio hit the internet, and now we are hearing the details straight from Ashton.
The Basshead recounts being approached by the guitarist, saying that as a fan of Rage Against The Machine’s Work, he was flattered to discover that the appreciation was mutual.
"You could tell he wasn't faking it because he starts referencing different songs and different bass lines of different songs. You quickly realize, 'Woah! He is not only a fan, he is really fucking educated [on electronic music],” Ashton told Rolling Stone.
Ashton is actually one of many electronic producers the guitarist is collaborating with for a new project. Morello intends to recreate these electronic collaborative songs live with "this super, perverted, unexplainable, bastardized guitar mutant instrument thing," as Ashton described it.
Ashton went on to explain how he responded to Morello's invitation and how they went about the collaboration, as the bass producer had stipulations and a vision for the way they would work together.
"I proposed to him that we basically pretend that we are a band and that we write a song together. I pretty flagrantly just said, 'I want to make a Rage Against the Machine song if that's cool, and I don't want someone to hear it and think, 'Oh, it's a DJ remix of Rage Against the Machine.' I just want it to sound like some fucking funnel into a hurricane, and we have it, that's the cool news. We have this fucking killer song."
Lorin says that the instrumental of the track is finished, and that the duo is currently running through their options for vocalists on the track. We'll keep you updated as more news surfaces.
