As one of the single greatest inventions ever produced in modern time, the world wide web connects and brings people together on a global scale. One of the most interesting side effects of having people plugged into the same network is that it gives us the ability to analyze trends and information in ways never before possible.

This new app takes data from Spotify plays and quantifies them by city, creating a musical map of the world based on how often certain songs get played from geographical points. The map compares the local popularity of a song to it's global popularity in order to pinpoint the musical identity of that region. Eliot Van Buskirk, a data analyst for Spotify, explains how the map measures its data:

"This is music that people in each city listen to quite a bit, which people in other cities also do not listen to very much."
