Diplo Talks Race, Spending Money & Talking Shit In New Interview

Diplo got together with LA Times for a tell-all interview, touching on a range of topics from spending money, talking shit and dealing with race issues as it pertains to the credibility of a producer.

Growing up as the son of a bate shop owner in Florida, Diplo (Wesley Pentz) didn't grow up in an incredibly affluent setting. In fact, his upbringing sometimes leaves him uncomfortable spending his hard-earned cash on luxury items like when he brought his personal trainer along with him on a chartered jet a few weeks back.

"My family growing up was so cheap that I feel dumb blowing money on something like that. That was an extra 30 minutes to get to the airport, and then we sat on the tarmac for an hour. I was, like, '$10,000 for this? I should've flown Southwest."

As a producer with a wide sense of musical taste that culls influence from every corner of the globe, notably from Jamaican sounds like Reggae and Dancehall, Diplo has come under some fire and faced allegations of perpetrating "cultural appropriation."

In his own words, he's been accused of being "not black enough" to produce his reggae-infused work with Major Lazer, while paradoxically receiving heat for being "not white enough" to collaborate with Country group The Band Perry.

"I'm not just excavating stuff and taking it home to my library. It's a back-and-forth conversation."

But Diplo is controversial for more than just his cultural interests. He's known for his online feuds and calling out other artists on social media. For Diplo, the controversy is all part of his brand.

"But I do talk a lot of [shit]. I've got to watch that."

The trash talk is one way Diplo keeps himself relevant and in the headlines, and its effective. Pentz is well aware that as a music producer working in popular genres, the clock is always ticking.

"You only have a certain amount of time as a person making relevant music. There's a window, and I'm in the middle of it."
