After causing an uproar in the dance community earlier this week by banning the #edm hashtag, Instagram has swiftly decided to reverse the ban and reinstate the hashtag for use on the social media platform. Word spread like fire around the EDM blogosphere yesterday as it became apparent that the hashtag had been unblocked from use.

In an official statement to THUMP, an Instagram spokesperson explained the reasoning behind the controversial move.

"We block (i.e. make unsearchable) certain hashtags when they are consistently being used to share images and videos that violate our Community Guidelines. In this case, #EDM was being used to share content that violates our guidelines around nudity. We're working on a way to more quickly restore certain hashtags that have previously been blocked. We're also working on ways to better communicate our policies around hashtags."

The response is likely due to the bad press surrounding the decision to block the hashtag, as the more than 11 million images connected to #edm are again visible.

Feel free to head on over to Instagram here and peruse the edm hashtag.
