deadmau5 Drops New Album, Announces Tour & Previews New Stage [WATCH]
After officially announcing the album early in November, deadmau5 released his new LP W:/2016ALBUM/ today via his mau5trap imprint, marking his first studio album released independently. Spanning 12-tracks, deadmau5's sixth studio album comes after a year and a half of ups and downs.
The last 18 months have involved exciting performances and projects like headlining performances at Bonnaroo, Reading and Leeds festivals and music collaborations with his favorite video game Dota 2. Most recently, deadmau5 created the new anthem for Toronto's professional ice hockey team, and announced his first ever MasterClass online production classes.
But it was also during this time period that the artist threatened to kill off the deadmau5 project all together, deleting his SoundCloud, Facebook and Twitter pages. He later reinstated them and released public statements apologizing and opening up about his struggles with depression.
deadmau5 credits the idea for the album's name, which refers to the location of the files on his computer, to his fans who suggested it during one of his Twitch livestreams. In an interview with Pete Tong, deadmau5 described the album as having "an 80's sci-fi, fantasy vibe" with the overall themes heavily inspired by his purchase of the Prophet 10 synthesizer.
Some of the album's tracks were previously uploaded to his now-defunct Fuck My Life SoundCloud page, but the two tracks deadmau5 chose to release as singles were "Snowcone" and "Let Go (featuring Grabbitz)."
After having previously expressed disappointment and disdain for his own album, deadmau5 has already announced he will release 20 tracks in 2017 to his twitch stream audience. You can peep the tracks, which have already been mastered, with comments here. You can also watch the full twitch stream at player.twitch.tv.
