This DJ Was Charged and Fined By Police For Playing the Wrong Song
Kashawn Harris, better know by his stage name DJ Boogy, is a 25 year old DJ from Springfield Massachusetts. Last October he was hired to DJ an alumni reunion for his alma mater Westfield State University, at local pub Shenanigans.
When police received reports that the bar was overcrowded and becoming rowdy, they showed up to disperse the partygoers and shut the event down. Harris played the NWA song "Fuck Tha Police" while the bar was being shut down, and Officer Juanita Mejias wrote him a summons for disorderly conduct.
Officer Mejias indicated in her report that Harris chose to play the song intentionally to instigate violence:
"I believed at that time the combination of alcohol, the excessive amount of people in the bar and the song that the DJ chose to play at that time was an intentional act by the DJ to incite the crowd which showed a reckless disregard for public safety"
But Harris disputes this point, saying that the song was already cued up before the police showed up, and that his side of the bar was already cleared out when it came on.
"I had no intention of inciting a riot. It was just college kids having fun. For them to even think I was trying to start riots was frustrating for me. That's not my kind of background, that's not where I come from."
Without being there it's hard to judge who is right in this situation, but it's a little upsetting to think that a DJ could be charged by police just for playing the wrong song at the wrong time. But on the other hand, if he was deliberately trying to incite violence, then he should probably face some sort of consequences.
