Hear 5 New Tracks From One of the Most Anticipated Albums of 2016
Harley Streten aka Flume dropped 5 new tracks from his upcoming album Skin in a one-hour interview with Triple J. The Australian producer’s sophomore album is slated to drop on Friday, May 27th, and is easily one of the most highly anticipated releases of the year.
In the interview, the producer admitted to struggling with "second album syndrome," pointing out that these pressures actually inspired the album title. When it comes to collaborations, Streten explains that he tries to keep an open mind.
"Usually I don't have a singer in mind, usually I'll just come up with something - when I've got a singer in mind I don't have a beat ready, I'll just be a big fan of them. Say for example, the Little Dragon one ['Take A Chance'] - I've always wanted to do something with them, so getting the opportunity on this record was awesome." (Triple J)
It certainly seemed to work out for him as the album includes some very high-profile collaborations with artists Beck, Wu Tang's Raekwon, Little Dragon, Vic Mensa, Tove Lo, Vince Staples, AlunaGeorge, Allan Kingdom and Kucka. Working with Beck, as we can only imagine, was "surreal" for Streten.
"It was a total head-spin. I went over to his house in L.A. and we hung out. I was playing him ideas and he was singing stuff and it was just totally surreal... He's lovely, really cool. I feel like I ask people who have been in the industry for a while a lot of questions. I'm always really curious about, you know, 'How do you deal with success psychologically?' and all this stuff. It's just really interesting to speak to someone with so much experience."
Fans will be excited to learn that Streten is making his own vocal debut. For the first time, Streten used some of his own vocal samples for the album.
"I feel a little bit naked right now ... Is that me? Yeah, just singing demo vocals into my Macbook microphone. This is my falsetto. I do a bit of 'oohs' and 'aaahs' for background but this is the first time my voice has been played alone on radio. Ever."
