Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano Are Making Noise With 'The One That Got Away' [PREMIERE]
2017 is on pace to be one of the biggest years ever for Holland based duo Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano.
The two artists first developed their upbeat and energetic brand of house music when they first came together in 2009. With previous collaborations with Nicky Romero on 2013's 'S.O.T.U' and Sander van Doorn on 'ABC', Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano have already established a strong support from leading labels like Spinnin' and Armada.
Now the duo are looking to chart their own path with their new single 'The One That Got Away' ft. Clara Mae which marks the first release on their new record label SONO Music. With a sexy new video to accompany the track, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano are starting off 2017 HOT!
Looking to create a platform to showcase talented and rising stars, SONO Music is a project focused on curating quality beats. We had a chance to chat with Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano about their new label, their love life, and how being a parent really helps to put things into perspective.
EDM: You're about to drop your brand new single, and the first release of 2017 with 'The One That Got Away'. What's the story behind the song? How did you get connected with Clara Mae?
SJRM: Clara is an amazing vocalist, the first time we heard Clara’s voice we immediately wanted to work with her. We reached out to her and luckily she wanted to work with us as well haha, so she came to Holland and we went into the studio together. The end result is ‘The One That Got Away'!
The video for the new single is definitely sexy and a little bit decadent, just like your lives, right? Is this track in reference to a special someone 'that got away'?
Haha our lives are definitely sexy but not that decadent as everybody is willing to believe. We both have young children and as you might know diapers aren’t that glamourous. But the song is not for someone in particular, we’re both happy in love.
So 2017 means a lot of new opportunities, especially for your new label SONO Music. "The One That Got Away" will mark your first release on the new label. What led you both to want to start your own label? What type of artists and sound are you looking to curate on the label?
We’re really happy with SONO Music, a label of our own was something we wanted for a long time but it just never happened. The time felt right so we decided that it was now or never. With SONO Music we’re not looking for a specific sound or genre, we’re just looking for those crazy talented musicians to give them a platform.
You've developed a strong fan following with your fusion of house beats, with eclectic EDM and pop sensibilities. What is your songwriting process like and what artists do you draw the strongest influence from?
When we’re working on some new tracks we just take some time off from everything to focus on that. We go a lot to LA to work in the studio or just here in Amsterdam. We lock ourselves up for days until the track is finished. We are influenced by a lot of different types of music and artists and we think you can here that back in our own music. Diversity in music is really important to us, we think that’s how you come up with your own style as an artist.
You're based in Amsterdam but have had the opportunity to play all over the globe. What is it about Amsterdam that makes it particularly fertile for producing successful DJs?
We don’t think it’s Amsterdam particularly but the whole of Holland. Some of the best DJ’s of the world come from Holland which sets the bar for upcoming dj’s/producers really high but at the same time there is not a lot of competition amongst all the DJ’s and most of the guys are giving young and upcoming producers a platform which makes it easier for them to make a name for themselves.
What has been the craziest thing to happen on stage during one of your performances?
We’ve experienced some crazy shit on stage over the last few years. But what surprises us the most every time is what’s happening in front of the stage. All those people jumping around and dancing on your music, that’s something we never get used to, so big shout out to our fans!
What are some exciting things that we can expect from Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano in 2017? Any big projects lined up?
Well SONO Music of course and our new music, we have a lot of music ready that we’re going to release this year. Next to that we’re really excited about Sexy By Nature, some big things are going to happen but unfortunately we can’t say anything about that yet.
