Zedd & Alessia Cara Turn Back Time With Their New Music Video “Stay”

After a series of posts on Zedd’s Instagram with stills of Zedd and Alessia Cara from the past 3 days, the official video for “Stay” is finally here!

Following up on “Ignite,” a classic Zedd banger from 2016, in 2017 we saw Zedd changing things up with “Stay.” The danceable, melodic tune features crisp drum beats and the sounds of ticking hands of a clock that echo the anthemic lyrics’ theme. With a newer, slightly pop sound and Alessia’s beautiful voice, this one had all the makings of an instant hit. This week, “Stay” continued to climb the charts as it officially entered the top 10 on the US Top 40 at radio, sitting pretty at #9. The single also moved up to #14 on the Billboard Hot 100, seeing it snag a top 10 spot soon enough? We’d think so.

On to the music video, it runs in multiple loops much like an ‘IFTTT’ (which stands for If This Then That, for the unawares) situation of sorts. Directed by Tim Mattia who’s previously worked with the likes of Halsey and The 1975, the video runs on two parallel timelines. The video seems in a large way inspired by the 1998 movie Sliding Doors that examines how one small decision (or twist of fate) can have a grave impact on someone’s life. Playing on the coincidental timing, the video runs through the two scenarios of Zedd and Cara staying in the same hotel. Both cases show Zedd running after an elevator that is nearly closed with Cara in it. In the first, he doesn’t make it before the doors slide shut and they each go about their days alone showing Cara at a diner and Zedd playing a game of Pool, absolutely unaware of the others existence. The video then plays back in reverse to show the second scenario, where Cara gets the elevator door just in time to let a charging Zedd in and sparks fly between the two as they hit a diner and drive around Los Angeles in a convertible.

In this case however, all’s well that doesn’t end well! Simply put, every action has a consequence. And unfortunately the video ends on a rather unpleasant note for the budding couple. We see Zedd and Cara carefree roaming the streets when Zedd is taken down unawares by a car in the middle of the road. And a hysterical Cara towards the end as we seem to see Zedd dead (*Insert Zeds Dead joke here*) only for the video to rewind back to the very beginning in the last shot!

Discussing the video Zedd says:

“I'm so excited to share the Stay music video with you! Alessia and I worked so hard on it and hope you love it as much as we do.”

Hot on the heels of “Stay”, Zedd had taken to Twitter last week and made mighty promises of his new music being all things incredible! Definitely canNOT wait for what's to come…!
