NYC Passes Legislation in Support of the Nightlife Industry
Good news for our New York friends! The New York City Council has passed legislation to create an Office of Nightlife and a Nightlife Task Force. Now despite sounding like bad news (because everything political in the past year has been nothing short of a disaster) this is actually great news! This legislation will help give the NYC nightlife industry representation in government.
This legislation will give the nightlife industry a direct line to the mayor. It will involve a group of members who will provide suggestions and propose legislation to the government. This will hopefully help, undo some of the damage previous legislation has done to the industry. Considering NYC nightlife is a $10 billion industry, it’s shocking that they’ve been brushed aside for so long. Better late than never, right?
The hero of NYC nightlife is councilman Rafael Espinal. He proposed the legislation and fought to get it approved. In a quote from Mixmag, the man himself speaks about the impact of the legislation:
“From DIY venues to nightclubs, this bill accurately reflects the diversity of the NYC nightlife scene and makes it possible to recognize the contributions these spaces make. I am happy to see the quick progress of this legislation and look forward to continuing conversations with local communities, workers, small businesses and nightlife advocates on how NYC can be supportive of the nightlife experience.”
