California May Become the First State to Legalize Magic Mushrooms
California is one of the most progressive states in the US. Having been at the forefront of the legalization of marijuana, the forward-thinking state could soon be the first to legalize magic mushrooms.
Kevin Saunders, a former mayoral candidate, filed the proposal early Friday morning. He added that magic mushrooms are a Class A drug in the United Kingdom and they helped him recover from his heroin addiction 15 years ago. "I think we're seeing something that could literally heal our brothers and sisters. We're talking about real cutting-edge stuff," states Saunders.
The recently proposed legislation hopes to view psilocybin, the main ingredient in mushrooms, decriminalized so everyone over the age of 21 won't be hit by the repercussions for selling, growing, possessing, or transporting the substance. Psilocybin has been used to treat depression (with positive results) in cancer patients, recent studies show.
