Vinylly is reinventing the dating app wheel by matching users based on their music compatibility.

During the pandemic, many experienced dating app fatigue and grew tired of the hackneyed swiping model, which largely relies on superficial tendencies like appearance. Vinylly is doing things differently, connecting people over a key shared interest and personality indicator: music taste.

Vinylly takes your streaming data and music habits, then asks questions about the role music plays in your life in order to create matches. You can also create and edit playlists, chat using music-related conversation icebreakers and even get concert tickets for first dates.

Bonding over music with others releases dopamine and lowers cortisol while increasing empathy and communication, according to Vinylly founder Rachel Van Nortwick, who pointed to research published in the company's blog.

"When it comes to sharing interests such as music, art, and general entertainment, compatibility in these areas can be essential for some people and fairly irrelevant for others,” Dr. Carla Marie Manly, a psychologist and author, told The Zoe Report in 2020. “If a certain type of music is an essential part of a person’s life, that person may tend to gravitate toward a partner who understands and shares that interest. On the opposite end of the continuum, if a person has little regard or great dislike for a certain interest that is deeply valued by the other partner, that disparity can be a dealbreaker."

In 2022, Van Nortwick says Vinylly users saw over 40,000 profile views, 21,000 playlist views and nearly 19,000 matches after the company launched its own proprietary profile generator.
