The Intern Debuts with Fyre Festival-Inspired Single "I'm On Fyre"
This month marks two years since Fyre Festival gave promoters the blueprint of everything not to do, and it remains a meme goldmine to this day. Apparently it also serves as a springboard for up-and-coming acts. A producer who goes by The Intern has inaugurated their project with a tech house track titled "I'm On Fyre" that pokes fun at the biggest festival flop of our era.
Interestingly, "I'm On Fyre" bears distinct similarities to The Chainsmokers' viral 2014 hit "#SELFIE." Both singles use distorted spoken word samples to make commentary on vapid cultural trends perpetuated by social media. If nothing else, The Intern's debut release serves as testament to house music's present standing as the genre du jour for producers hoping to tap into current trends.
In a debacle that spawned documentaries, an upcoming feature film, and even an outrageously priced pizza slice, Fyre's organizers enlisted Instagram influencers to promise a luxury experience. What they delivered instead was a trash-strewn campground with no entertainment offerings. As a result, the ill-fated event brand's brainchild, Billy McFarland, was sentenced to six years in federal prison last year.
