The wait is finally over. RÜFÜS DU SOL has finally released the full Solace, the album they have been teasing over the past year. It's been a full two years since we were all rocked by the emotive power that was Bloom and god were we ready for more.
Solace is the sonic storytelling of Tyrone Lindqvist, Jon George, and James Hunt. The Aussie trio deliver the indie electronic soundscape we know and love but somehow take us to the next level yet again. The whole mood of the album takes the listener through a love story, according to Hunt, who explains:
"The record is more personal and vulnerable than we anticipated. We had some of the most amazing times in the studio, as well as some of the most isolated, lonely times. That contrast naturally bled into what we were writing, which is why solace is our ode to finding peace in a time of distress."
A sense of place and the sentiments that accompany it have always been a crux of the RÜFÜS DU SOL songwriting process. The band’s debut album was recorded in Australia’s idyllic east coast while their sophomore Bloom LP was produced in Berlin. These environments imbue the record with a certain mood and flavor, and “SOLACE” is no different. Recorded in Los Angeles, the effort exudes not the Hollywood glitz, but rather the shadowed lest oft seen underbelly of the city as well as the barren but beautiful spaces of the desert.
They open with "Treat You Better." It's about reclaiming love for someone after losing sight of what's important. Tyrone's voice has become so iconic that once it enters the listener is immediately put at ease. They then get into a pulsing, somewhat tropical house-reminiscent groove. It's the perfect start to an epic collection.
"Eyes" takes us deeper into the romance. The beat reflects that feeling with a sexier house tone as they bring up the tempo with their notorious brass stabs. "New Sky" just gets right under your skin when it begins. It has a much deeper house vibe to it. It's transcendental.

"Lost in My Mind" is a track the trio has said they wrote in Joshua Tree. You can really feel the vastness of the landscape in the melody from the gang vocals chanting in the background. "No Place" was one of the early releases. It's one of the tracks that has a darker tone and harder hits. When "All I've Got" starts developing, it's hard not to feel like your on an epic car ride into the desert. If those high hats don't get your head bobbing I don't know what will.
"Underwater" is straight-up majestic. Layered with the catchy background hook, the trio has combined their indie house trademark beats with a new tribal elegance that puts the group in a sonic realm of their own. It's vibey to the max. "Solace," the title track, is about the pain of feeling forgotten by a past love. It's a much more stripped down song. It's atmospheric with the echoing and rippling distorted bass at the end. Does anyone else feel Imogen Heap influences with this one?
Last but not least, they wrap up the album with "Another Life". It's the perfect ending to a fantastic track list. They bring up the pace a tad which makes you feel like it's not really a goodbye, but a see you later.
Thank you RÜFÜS DU SOL for helping us find some solace of our own in this beautiful music.
