Dutch extraordinaire Hardwell is somewhat of a household name in electronic music.

While the days of big room dominating the main stage may be over, Hardwell has managed to progress with the times, experimenting with different sounds while also staying true to his original style. You’ll still see him on the top of festival lineups, rocking the main stage and playing to the crowd wonderfully.

For good reason too. Hardwell is a master of his craft, an artist with fine-tuned production skills and a natural affinity to cater distinctly to each crowd he performs for. Both, behind the decks and in the studio, he consistently puts in the work.

This week, the former world #1 DJ will be performing an exclusive set for One Mix, Beats 1’s weekly radio show. With the recent announcement of his Hardwell & Friends EP series making a comeback this spring, there’s a lot to be excited about. Beyond that, expect fresh mashups from Hardwell featuring artists like Ed Sheeran, Axwell /\ Ingrosso, Post Malone and more!

Air Dates:
Friday 26th January 2018 - 23:00 LA / 02:00 NY / 07:00 UK
Saturday 27th January 2018 - 06:00 LA / 09:00 NY / 14:00 UK

Before taking the decks, we got a chance to ask Hardwell some questions. Read on for personal insights like his first show experience, favourite BPM, industry prediction and favourite throwback track! What was your first show experience like?

Hardwell: DJing at my friend’s birthday was my first ever ‘real’ gig. I remember being really nervous right up until the first record played then absolutely loved it!

The first time you brought your mom to one of your shows?

My parents have been with me since the very beginning. They both used to take me to my shows before I was even legal to get into the clubs.

The artist who inspired you to become a musician?

Tiësto. He was the local dj from my hometown Breda who became the biggest dj in the world.

What's your guilty pleasure record?

I don’t really have a guilty pleasure record cause I love all types of music. Anything from Adele to Guns n Roses to Dr Dre to House music

What's your desert-island dance record?

What's your favourite BPM?

What's your all-time favourite festival?

Ultra Music Festival Miami is one I really love.

What's the biggest misconception about dance music?

It’s not going to last. See you again in 30 more years.

How often do you get out and have fun, and where do you go?

I make sure to take time out to relax with friends and family so probably a few days a month I’ll catch up with them and enjoy some down time, go to my local bar Café Janssen. But I’m sure if you ask anyone who knows me they’ll say that even in days off I’m still usually found in the studio working on new music.

What's the city with the most underrated dance scene?

New York. It’s an iconic city around the world but I feel sometimes people don’t give the NYC dance scene the credit it deserves.

What's your industry prediction for the next year?

Bitcoin or is it blockchain? A digital revolution will impact music in more creative ways than we can probably fully appeicate right now.

The best piece of advice for new producers?

Just believe in yourself and take your time, don’t rush your success.

Dead or alive, who would be your dream collaborator?

Dr Dre or Pharrell would be cool to work with in the studio

Backstage, what is one of the unique experiences you’ve had?

Being back stage at Madison Square Garden for my first world tour with my I Am Hardwell show was pretty crazy. Here I was at my sold out closing party in this iconic arena with pictures of so many musical heroes on the wall from rock to pop and hip hop to electronic music. Being such a passionate music fan it was a very special and surreal moment. Knowing the journey my and the tour team had taken to get to that moment I felt an enormous sense of achievement being there that night and loved every single moment of it.

What's a unique travel experience you've had?

The jet I was flying with last year broke down but thankfully my buddy Afrojack was leaving the same airport and managed to give me a lift in his.

What's your favourite throwback track?

I love dropping a good hip hop beat into my set. I’ve some amazing edits of tracks by DMX which really explode the atmosphere into a wild party.

Name one remix that you think is better than the original:

Lana Del Rey, "Summertime Sadness" (The Cedric Gervais remix)

What's one track that fans always lose their mind to?

My track ‘Spacemen’ still rips the roof off whenever I play it.

What's the perfect sunset track?

A classic Ibiza record, Kings of Tomorrow – Finally
