Just because Martin Garrix was dethroned from the DJ Mag Top 100 doesn't preclude him from being recognized as a leader in his space elsewhere. The Dutch DJ/producer took home an award in the category of Best Electronic at the MTV Europe Music Award (MTV EMA).
Runners up in the Best Electronic category included The Chainsmokers, Calvin Harris, DJ Snake and Marshmello. Martin Garrix (real name Martijn Garritsen) could not be present to accept his award; he posted a video thanking his fans for voting instead.
The runaway success of his 2013 breakout single, "Animals," propelled Garritsen into EDM superstardom when he was only 16. He went on to hit #1 on the DJ Mag Top 100 three years in a row, and his artist imprint, STMPD RCRDS, has provided a platform for up-and-comers the world over.
The MTV EMAs have taken place annually since 1994. 2019 awards in other categories like Best Pop, Best Hip-Hop and Best Rock were given to Halsey, Nicki Minaj and Green Day, respectively.
